Quick Overview

Rapid protein use is desirable immediately before and after exercise to help refuel recovering muscles, but delayed digestion and absorption may be more beneficial at other times – including bedtime when your body typically goes for hours without food. Casein proteins are sensitive and tend to thicken in the stomach.

Directions of Use

Using a shaker cup is the easiest and most convenient way to mix up a consistently great casein shake every time. Just add one heaping scoop of Gold Standard 100% Casein™ to a shaker cup filled with 10-12 oz of your preferred beverage. Cover and shake for 25-30 seconds. TIP: Adjust the intensity of your Gold Standard 100% Casein™ by varying the amount of liquid that you use to prepare it. For a bolder flavor with slightly more body and sweetness, mix one heaping scoop with 8-10 oz of water, milk, or your favorite beverage. For a milder tasting, less sweet shake, use 12-14 oz of liquid per scoop.

BLENDER: Add one heaping scoop of Gold Standard 100% Casein™ to a blender filled with 10-12 oz of water, milk, or your favorite beverage. Blend for 20-30 seconds. Then add 3-4 ice cubes and blend for an additional 30 seconds.
SHAKE UP YOUR SHAKE: By adding a few high-energy ingredients to your shake you can blend up a delicious meal: try adding fresh or frozen fruits (strawberries, bananas, peaches, etc.), peanut butter, flaxseed oil, yogurt, coconut, slivered almonds, or other ingredients.
STACK YOUR SHAKE: By adding supplements like Micronized Creatine, Glutamine, Taurine, and/or INSTANTIZED BCAA powders, you can make Gold Standard 100% Casein™ an even more powerful recovery product.

SPOON STIRRED: If you forgot your shaker cup or don't have time to get out the blender, you can just add one heaping scoop of Gold Standard 100% Casein™ to a glass filled with 10-12 oz of cold water, milk, or your favorite beverage. Then mix it up with a spoon for about 30 seconds or until powder is dissolved.

SUGGESTED USE: Consume approximately 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day through a combination of high protein foods and supplements. For best results, consume your daily protein allotment over several small meals spread evenly throughout the day. TIP: Try using "slower" Gold Standard 100% Casein™ with "faster" proteins like Gold Standard 100% Whey™ or Pro Complex® at different times for maximum effectiveness. Take Gold Standard 100% Casein™ immediately before bed and in between meals when delayed protein delivery is desired. Drink Gold Standard 100% Whey™ or Pro Complex® proteins before and immediately after workouts for a rapid "shot" of amino acids.

Warnings: DO NOT USE AS A SOLE SOURCE OF NUTRITION FOR WEIGHT LOSS OR MAINTENANCE. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.

  1. Works Well Review by John McMillin
    Overall Evaluation

I used to take whey protein before bed for recovery and growth but lately my recovery times have been taking too long. This Gold Standard Casein works very well with over night muscle recovery. I mix one scoop of the Casein with a Gatorade sized bottle of milk, shake it, and drink it. Over all it does what i wanted it to, help me recover faster. (Posted on 1/5/12)

  2. Great Review by Tolley
    Overall Evaluation

Casein is a great, long-lasting protein, perfect for right before bed as its aminos are release more slowly than whey. Casein, in general, is bland (think no fat, no salt, cottage cheese), and harder to mix than whey. Optimum Nutrition has here a decent casein, that is not too bad tasting and mixes better than most every other casein I've tried. The price is ok, but I'd like to see it cheaper (who wouldn't?). I mix it with whey and use it throughout the day. I have tried and rejected the chocolate flavor. (Posted on 1/5/12)

  3. Perfect Protein Review by Emily
    Overall Evaluation

I love this product. Optimum Nutrition does a great job with most of their produts and this is no different. The taste isn't as good as regular whey proteins but there really isn't anything that can be done about that. Casein is a slow digesting protein that usually lasts about 7 hours which makes it a perfect for night time. Highly recommended (Posted on 1/5/12)

  4. What makes ON- Casein Special ? Review by Sam
    Overall Evaluation

Yes I am science Guy so I would like to bring some scientific viewpoint, trying to keep my review Jargon free, or very simple for the least.

    1. Do I need Casein Supplement.

Almost every Human being can benefit from Casein, however everyone DOES NOT need a Casein supplement. I would recommend this supplement only who is at intermediate or advance fitness levels (rest will do good with cottage cheese- provided you relish it). If you are a beginner, please stay from pure Casein supplement, its not the starting point by any mean and you will not get much benefit out of it. Beginners are better off with Whey only or blend supplements.

    2. Hey is Casein better than Whey?

Yes and No. The big question is compared to What. If one is looking for a general protein source, then NO way. Caesin is not a well rounded and balanced protein, it is a specialized protein. In other words, its Amino Acid profile is not balanced. Its inclined towards recovery ( high Glutamine and Anti Catabloic properties). Lastly its Biological value is only 77 compared to 104 of Whey.

However, what it does for the body, no other protein can. It digests very very slow and release rich amount of Glutamine and other Amino acids which helps you recover and stay Anabolic.

    3. What is Special about ON Casein

First and foremost, its not exactly the most delicious and consistent protein by nature. Nothing that ON can do to change it, this is the nature of Casein. But, what ON does is that it gives you the best of Casein, the Micellar Casein. Making it the best Casein protein supplement in the market.

    4. Whats the heck with Casein and Why is Casein protein more expensive than Whey?

This is a fair question since, out of all the protein in Milk, 80% is Casein and 20% is Whey. This means Casein should be cheaper. ...Not exactly, out of the total casein, only limited amount of Casein is Micellar Casein. The one which is ideal for a protein supplement and definitely the most effective. The cost of extracting Micellar Casein is way more than Whey.

Therefore as a rule of thumb, never go with a brand, in which Casein and Whey are priced at same. As per ground economics, Casein will always be more expensive than Whey.

    5. What do I do with the taste and Clumps.

Reports have suggested that the best way to make a Casein shake is to mix it with 1 cup of skimmed milk and the rest can be water. You will find a a better taste and lesser clumps if you just mix a bit of skimmed milk. Secondly, always use a electric blender whenever available. Lastly, add Casein powder after you add Milk/Water as it has a high tendency to stick to the base of the container.

Wish you a great health (Posted on 1/5/12)

  5. Well done, ON. Review by Furuness
    Overall Evaluation

Almost any company can produce decent, good-tasting, cheap whey, but doing the same for casein is a trickier proposition. ON has done a solid job with this casein. Mixing it with low-fat or nonfat milk makes for a nice, creamy shake.

A couple of tips: don't bother trying to mix this with a fork or a shaker bottle. You'll get clumps and you'll hate it. Casein demands a blender. (Posted on 1/5/12)
